A revised version of ISO 14001, the recognised standard for Environmental Management Systems, has been published to reflect new global priorities, including climate resilience, biodiversity, and sustainable resource use, whilst strengthening existing requirements such as change management procedures and evaluating environmental management system effectiveness.
What are the changes?
BS EN ISO 14001:2026 is the latest edition and replaces BS EN ISO 14001:2015+A1:2024 which will be withdrawn. The changes that have been made to the standard in this new edition include:
- New clause on change management – A major addition designed to support proactive, risk‑based adaptation and alignment with other management system structures.
- Expanded requirements for externally provided products, services and processes – Reflecting modern supply chain complexity and the need for stronger oversight.
- Clearer guidance on internal audits and management reviews – More explicit expectations around objectives, inputs and programme design.
- Merging of improvement and continual improvement requirements – Reduces duplication, improves clarity, and emphasizes ongoing progress.
- Refined structure for easier use – Clauses reorganised for simplicity and improved flow, benefiting both new and experienced users.
- Stronger emphasis on leadership, culture and engagement – Reinforcing that environmental responsibility must be embedded in everyday decision‑making and behaviour.
- Clearer explanation of life cycle perspective and risk/opportunity management – Supporting more consistent, confident implementation.
If you have previously used BS EN ISO 14001, then this 2026 edition will simplify integration with other management system standards and enhances clarity around audits, leadership responsibilities and continual improvement requirements. If you are new to the standard, the refined structure and clearer guidance make BS EN ISO 14001 more accessible, practical and easier to adopt confidently.
