Driving with diabetes is regulated by the DVLA. Drivers with bus, coach or lorry licences (known as a Group 2 licence) are required to inform the DVLA if they have diabetes treated by insulin or other medication (i.e. not treated by diet).
There are certain legal requirements for drivers who manage their diabetes using insulin or similar medication, such as checking blood glucose levels within 2 hours before and every 2 hours during driving. Effective 7 November 2025, Group 2 drivers with diabetes will have the option to use Continuous Glucose Monitoring Systems (CGMS) as an alternative to traditional finger-prick blood glucose testing.
DVLA has prepared updated guidance in leaflets INF294 and INS186 which can be found here. To understand how you can better support your drivers to prevent and manage diabetes, contact the Diabetes Safety Organisation here.
