The new code of practice is for those Companies who use Excavators as Cranes. It has been produced by OPERC in conjunction with LANTRA, NPORS, Birmingham City University, Utility Services and the HSE.
This 40 page PDF covers:
- Risks posed when using excavators as cranes
- Role of the banksman
- General requirements for the use of hand signals
- Banksman hand signals
- 6 pages of printable hand-outs showing hand signals
This new, unique code of practice aims to address the issue of poor communication between operator and banksman by providing a set of unequivocal (and in many cases long established) hand signals. Even where other communication devices may be used (such as two-way radio), the basic requirement to communicate using hand signals is essential as technology can, and often does, fail for a variety of reasons.
