Why should you use this standard?
The standard was revised to reflect current practice and standards, particularly in relation to fire door installation and maintenance. Fire door assemblies represent a life-safety product and incorrect installation and maintenance may compromise the ability of the products to perform.
The recommendations cover timber-based hinged or pivoted pedestrian door assemblies or door leaves, fitted into frames of any material. They are applicable to fire performance and smoke control but do not cover security, ergonomic factors, or functional performance other than with respect to fire resistance.
What’s changed since the last update?
- All references to the BS 5588 series and BS 7974 are replaced by reference to BS 9991 and BS 9999
- References to doorsets removed from the scope (now covered by BS EN 16034)
- Updates have been made to product guidance within the standard (e.g. door leaves, frames, apertures, hardware, installation, maintenance)
- Reference to steel door assemblies removed
- Regulation 7 of the Building Regulations 2010 and Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 , the Fire (Scotland) Act 2005  and the Fire Safety Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2010  are now referenced
- There’s been a major rewrite of the guidance associated with the sealing between the door assembly and the surrounding structure
NOTE: BS 8214 is only applicable to door assemblies that are designed to provide fire resistance ratings of up to and including 2 h when tested in accordance with BS 476-22 or BS EN 1634-1. It does not cover impact safety of glazing, recommendations for which are given in BS 6262-4.
