This guide provides advice on RPE fit testing for the employer and those conducting fit tests.
The guide gives a comprehensive overview of:
- Information on fit test methods
- Information on what can be achieved from a fit test
- The core information to be included in a fit test report
This guidance assumes that you have chosen to use tight-fitting RPE as part of your control regime following an appropriate risk assessment. It also assumes that you have considered the wider aspects of RPE provision found on the HSE website and in the guidance document Respiratory protective equipment at work: A practical guide (HSG53).
Fit testing should be conducted by a competent person. Competence can be demonstrated by accreditation under the Fit2Fit RPE Fit Test Providers Accreditation Scheme. This scheme has been developed by the BSIF, together with industry stakeholders, and is supported by HSE.
