The purpose of this new training video from Paragon Training is to raise awareness of the dangers and of the measures that every person involved must take to ensure that no one on a construction site is exposed to unnecessary risks from vehicles. The programme sets out to illustrate the responsibilities incumbent on everyone – from the client and contractors through to every driver and every site-worker. Personal accountability Increasingly, personal accountability for vehicle accidents on construction sites is levelled at everyone involved. That includes contractors, subcontractors, employers, managers, designers, plant hirers, health and safety advisors and supervisors, employees and clients as well as site workers.

At one time, legislation included identifying gross negligence only of an individual. Now prosecutions can be based on failure in a company’s collective efforts to ensure the health and safety of its employees and other workers. The penalties for breaching health & safety rules can mean the imposition of Improvement and Prohibition Notices by the Health & Safety Executive, as well as six figure fines and even prison sentences. They can include not just direct expense such as material, plant and building damage but also production delays, the imposition of onerous administrative procedures and, not least, serious damage to morale. In some cases, construction site vehicle accidents have also meant reduced opportunities for the companies involved to tender for future work.

Alan Farnod from Paragon Training said “It is perhaps stating the obvious that avoiding the human tragedies and the harsh penalties can be achieved only by effective management throughout the construction process. Health and safety must be the number one priority. And making sure that H&S procedures are implemented and continually checked is the responsibility of everyone involved in a construction project.” Exactly what those responsibilities are and how to fulfil them – and thereby cutting the number of human tragedies and serious material cost – are fully illustrated in Paragon Training’s DVD “Avoiding Vehicle Accidents on Construction Sites”.
