Environmental News & Policy Updates
Where does the new Government stand on Environment?
The results are in and the Conservatives have won the 2019 General Election with a landslide majority. Climate change has been a key priority of the election campaign alongside the NHS and Brexit. All party manifestos pointed to mandates on net-zero emissions, with the Tories sticking with the 2050 timeframe recommended by the Committee on Climate Change. The Conservative manifesto featured some standout commitments, notably:
- Plant 11 million trees to maximise wildlife benefit
- Invest £800m to build the first fully deployed carbon capture storage cluster by the mid-2020s
- Ban the export of plastic waste to non-OECD countries
- Lower energy bills by investing £9.2bn in the energy efficiency of homes, schools and hospitals
- Net-zero emissions by 2050, which is already enshrined into law.
Its now time to ensure the Environment Agenda is at the heart of the priorities and the raft of green policy and bills such as the Environment Bill, decarbonisation of the transport sector etc are resurfaced. Edie 13 December 2019
National Federation of Builders launch call to action on carbon.
The report is a call to action for both Government and the industry to take a radical approach to meet the 2050 zero carbon target. Construction directly influences 47% of UK carbon emissions and 61% of UK waste and is a critical part of the UK solution to meeting its targets. A full copy of the report is available here
Wales consulting on waste recyclingThe
The Welsh Government are currently consulting on ways to increase recycling from non-domestic premises such as businesses, public sector bodies and other premises. If you work or have sites in Wales, you may be interested in participating in the consultation. Please see here
The Environmental Manual has a series of new updates to take into account changes to waste requirements, nuisance etc. A new section has also been developed covering the issue of site set up and environmental considerations when planning a new site.
Flood Risk & Silt Pollution
The recent deluge of rain has seen many parts of the UK underwater having devastating impacts on homes, businesses and communities. Flooding also causes issues in construction with silt run off, water pollution incidents from pollutants such as oils, chemicals and other building materials etc. The CIP Environmental Manual has recently updated its guidance on water management plans which includes potential flood risks.
