Environmental News & Policy Updates
UK Government sets net zero carbon emissions target by 2050.
Recently the Government announced plans to amend the Climate Change Act and introduce a net zero emission target. Presently the country is committed to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 80% by 2050. According to the Committee on Climate Change, which recommended the move in its recent report, the construction industry has little more than 10 years to take all new buildings over to net zero carbon if the goal is to be met. The commitment will also need wholesale changes to energy generating infrastructure and big changes to new buildings and improvements to existing buildings. This will require a switch away from fossil-fuel based heating, increasing the energy efficiency of the building stock, and improving the energy efficiency of lighting and electrical appliances. It will also necessitate the widespread use of heat pumps to replace boilers and accelerating district heating and hydrogen technologies.
A study published this week by the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew and Stockholm University found that 571 plant species have disappeared in the last two and half centuries, suggesting that plant extinction is happening as much as 500 times faster than what would be normally expected.
A recent report by public opinion specialists You Gov reveals that society is more concerned about the environment that ever before, with over a quarter (27%) of Britons citing the environment in their top three issues facing the country, alongside Brexit and health.
Published this week the “Sustainable Buildings Markets Study” by Ramboll Group, found that sustainable buildings are becoming more mainstream, but the industry still doesn’t know enough about how valuable they are.

Air Quality Monitoring on Sites
The recent World Environment Day was around air quality. More construction sites are installing air quality monitoring systems either due to requirements set by GLA or to better understand the impact of the works on local air quality. John Sisk recently secured an innovation award with CCS for their real time air monitoring system. The Aeroqual dust sentry real-time monitors offer continuous, long-term monitoring in all conditions with notification emails being sent automatically, should the set limits be exceeded at any point during the construction stage (200μg/m3 as a 15 minute mean). Recorded information can be accessed through the Sonitus Systems online platform, where detailed charts of the constant readings are plotted.
The Smart Sponge® technologies absorbs hydrocarbons from water and allows clean water to pass through the Smart Sponge®, therefore creating clean, dischargeable water to enter the network or river.
The Smart Sponge® technology is oleophilic and chemically selects all Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) on contact, absorbing them within the Smart Sponge® structure and solidifying turning a liquid pollution into a stable, solid waste. The Smart Sponge® is hydrophobic and therefore, during the absorption process, the water passes straight through and out.
The CCS have launched a Spotlight on Plastics and Packaging to help raise awareness of the impact of plastics and packaging on the environment and provides the construction industry with guidance for tackling the issue.
